In the opening minutes in the 86 degrees heat, both teams played at a decent pace. Then in the 6th minute United won a throw-in that was taken by Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Marcus Rashford then won the ball and turned and drilled in a low cross into the box for Anthony Martial to score at the near post. The goal came 7 minutes after the start of the game.
United had another chance to double their lead when they went on the counter-attack. A quick one-two between Rashford and Martial opened up the Blades defence. But with an open goal Rashford didn’t get the right connection and the chance was lost. Rashford some minutes later again was in a position to score, but he completely missed the ball. United dominated possession and looked confident.
The Red Devils would get their second goal when Wan-Bissaka’s cross from the right-flank found Martial in the box and he slammed the ball past keeper Simon Moore in goal. The goal came one minute before the break, and then after three minutes of injury-time it was half-time.
After the break the Reds continued to press for more goals and were comfortable with the ball. Sheffield United looked more organized, and compact. With 56 minutes gone Mason Greenwood created a little space just outside of the box to score, but it as just wide of the far post.
Martial would get his third when Bruno Fernandes played the Frenchman into the box and he beautifully chip the ball over the keeper. The 74th minute goal was Martial’s first hattrick for Manchester United. Solskjaer would then make five substitutions in the 80th minute. Pereira replaced Pogba, McTominay came on for Fernandes, Ighalo on for Martial, James came on for Rashford and Mata replaced Greenwood.
Sheffield United looked out of ideas in order to get themselves back into the match. With the men in Red in complete control there was no comebacks for the visitors. Odion Ighalo had an opportunity to get his name on scoresheet, but his touch was poor and his resulting shot on goal was blocked.
United would just continue to attack and keep the Blades busy until the full-time whistle came. The Reds were deserved winners in this game it showed by their excellent performance today.
