Manchester United were victorious on Thursday in a 3-0 win at Pride Park in their FA Cup match to qualify for the quarterfinals. United will now travel to face Norwich City in the last eight.
Two goals from Odion Ighalo and one from Luke Shaw gave the visitors the away win. Derby County started off the game well and showed confidence. Wayne Rooney, a United great had the first opportunity of the game on 18 minutes when Luke Shaw was booked for a foul. He whipped in an in-swinging free-kick that was wonderfully saved by Sergio Romero.
Then it was United’s turn when Juan Mata received a pass from Bruno Fernandes, and took a low shot that was saved by Derby keeper Kelle Roos. United became more assertive and Ighalo had a shot on target. But the Reds would take the lead on 33 minutes when Luke Shaw’s shot bounced of the ground, and it flew into the top corner of the net via a slight deflection off Jesse Lingard.
The scorer would then become the provider when his pass found Ighalo in the box. The striker outmuscled two players and calmly finished his chance low into the bottom corner. The Reds were in control from there on and ended the first-half on top.
In the second-half, Derby came out with more energy and created a chance when Martyn Waghorn headed Jayden Bogle’s incisive cross wide. After that Scott McTominay’s drive flew wide of the post. The Ram’s hopes of a comeback never came to fruition, and in the 70th minute Ighalo netted his second goal. The Nigerian international received a pass from Mata, but his first shot was saved, however he scored with the rebound that bulged the roof of the net to make it 3-0.
Anthony Martial came off for Fred and later on Brandon Williams came on for Luke Shaw. Very late in the game Rooney would force a fantastic save from Romero and that ensured a clean sheet for United and another win.
