Manchester United is looking more solid in their general play. Our defence is more organized and that is partly down to Eric Bailly returning to the squad. Part of it has to do with all the defenders playing more together. The understanding between Bailly, Maguire, Shaw, and Lindelof has gotten better. Sometimes Brandon Williams plays at left-back and has shown his maturity as he continues to learn his craft in every game.
In the midfield it has more structure to it because of Bruno Fernandes and the players seem to better understand their roles and when to make runs and when to pass the ball. Everyone seems to be better aware of where other players are on the pitch. Bruno is orchestrating the play in the middle of the field and shows a great understanding of how the game should be played from midfield.
Paul Pogba will return to training this week. This is even better news for the team. It would be interesting to see if Pogba plays alongside Fernandes. I assume they will start together on a regular basis. But there could be some conflict there, because both players are similar in many ways. Both are creative players and both love to get forward into the box once they have the opportunity to.
They like running at opposing defences, although Pogba doesn’t do it often enough. They both have an acute awareness of where players are situated on the field. So they are some similarities. Maybe Solskjaer will play Pogba or McTominay deeper in midfield in a flexible system like a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-1-4-1 system to accomodate all of them. Fernandes would obviously play in an advanced role in a trio with the one or other two players acting like a shield for the back four.
Then lastly, in the striking department we now have Odion Ighalo that has looked lively and positive in his performances so far. He has a goal in two starts so far. He could of gotten a second goal when his close range shot in the box was saved by Jordan Pickford in the Everton game. He adds something fresh and new from the other strikers that we have. He loves to make runs into the box that the other strikers fail to do on a regular basis. Mason Greenwood continues to improve in every game, and Anthony Martial has 15 goals this season and is on course to surpass his total goal tally since he came to United.
Even without Marcus Rashford who will be a long-term absentee, we look much better upfront and I am happy by what I’ve seen by our strikers so far and I believe as the season goes on they will provide the team with more goals. The future all in a sudden on the pitch is looking more uplifting to Manchester United fans.
