Manchester United qualified for the semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Colchester on Wednesday night at Old Trafford. All the goals came in the second-half with Marcus Rashford, and Anthony Martial getting on the scoresheet. There was also an own goal from Ryan Jackson.
Manchester United dominated the pace and possession of the game from the start but couldn’t breach Colchester’s defence in the first-half. But in the second-half, United would make their dominance pay-off. Colchester had knocked off Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace in the previous rounds, and believed that they could do the same to Manchester United.
The Red Devils began to really ask questions of the visitor’s defence with sustained pressure as Marcus Rashford opened the scoring in the 51st minute.
Sergio Romero gathered the ball and then threw it to Nemanja Matic, then he quickly passed it to Rashford who slammed the ball past keeper Dean Gerken. With the score now at 1-0, the game began to open more for Solskjaer’s men.
Five minutes later things only got worse for the visiting side. Ryan Jackson tried to prevent Rashford from scoring with a tap-in, but he inadvertently put the ball into his own side’s net instead. Then just after the hour mark Martial made it 3-0, when he was unmarked and Rashford found him and he easily finished his chance from inside the six-yard box.
I was happy to see that we were able to finally brush aside this League two side. This team was dangerous and they showed it when they claimed Spurs and Crystal Palace as victims. This is a competition I believe that we can win because the Reds has had a good momentum in the team for the last few weeks. Now that we will be at home against Manchester City in the first leg we have a real chance to get to the finals.
The other tie will feature Leicester City v Aston Villa in the first leg. The first leg ties are on Jan. 7 and the second leg ties are on Jan. 28.
