Manchester United won 3-0 against Partizan Belgrade at Old Trafford in their Europa league match today. Goals by Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford secured victory for the hosts in group L. We have also secured qualification for the round of 32 of the tournament.
The Red Devils currently sit at the top of the table with 10 points and with two games to play. Both teams had goals ruled invalid in the first four minutes of the game. Anthony Martial had received a pass from Marcus Rashford and the French striker put the ball into the back of the net, But he was in an offside position. Then Umar Sadiq’s shot deflected over Sergio Romero by Marcos Rojo, but he was ruled offside also.
After nine minutes, Rashford had a chance to give United the lead after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross took a fortunate deflection into the striker’s path, but he struck his shot wide. Mason Greenwood got the opener in the 21st minute when Rashford’s ball split the defence and he cut inside his marker and blasted a left-footed drive to make it 1-0.
But Partizan tried to come back with a curling shot by Seydouba Soumah that went just wide four minutes later. Then Martial took advantage of a deflected clearance off Greenwood then meandered past three attempted challenges from Partizan’s defenders, and coolly shot the ball past the keeper.
With United up 2-0 we were really in the driver’s seat to win this match. But Martial could have scored two goals in a minute when his chip was just slightly off-target as the ball went over the bar as their keeper Stojkovic advanced. United continued the constant pressure on Partizan.
Juan Mata sent a long cross-field pass to Ashley Young, and he cushioned his lay-off for Rashford who smashed his drive high into the net to make it 3-0. Young almost added a goal to his assist, but his curling free-kick sailed wide. Fred almost made it four, but his free-kick was saved by Stojkovic. James Garner then replaced the Brazilian after 63 minutes.
Then some minutes later Andreas Pereira came on for Rashford with a loud applause from the crowd. Scott McTominay came off with an injury as the only negative in the match. But all in all United were wonderful on the night and we hope for more attacking and attractive football from them in the future.
