Manchester United’s disappointing loss to Bournemouth at the Vitality stadium was just another example of the fact the team is lacking in quality. Ole needs to upgrade his squad in certain areas like the striker positions and in midfield. In driving rain and powerful winds we struggled against a just above average team. We couldn’t even fight and put in a workman-like performance to get a 1-0 win in this match.
We lacked the energy and work ethic that was required to win the match. United all over the pitch didn’t really use the high pressing tactics that we used in previous matches that achieved success for us. We were never in control of the game. We didn’t have any rhythm in our play and Bournemouth just took advantage of that. I thought that Ole should have continued to use the 3-5-2 system that had worked so well for us against Liverpool, Norwich, Chelsea in the League cup and Partizan.
He should just stick with that formation for the rest of the season, unless he needs to change the system in certain circumstances or against certain teams. I believe that he made a mistake in going back to a 4-2-3-1 formation. This formation has rarely worked for us so Ole should stop using it. The 3-5-2 better suits the attributes that our players have.
United needs to get a ball winner or two in the center of midfield that can also keep ball for a decent time and pass it forward whenever he has the chance to. Winning balls in the air and on the ground along with tough tackling is paramount for any ball winner. Scott McTominay has been excellent in his last three games before this one in being positive in winning balls in central midfield and quickly distributing the ball upfield so that we can keep the attack flowing smoothly as possible.
This match also showed again that we need at least two quality strikers. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial hasn’t been consistent for us this season and even late last season in scoring goals or putting in decent displays. If we can bring in two very good strikers that will be great. Rashford is the only senior striker right now whose form has looked better lately.
Lastly in defence, we can’t seem to get enough clean sheets. The last time we had a clean sheet was last month against Partizan when he won 1-0 away. We have a few of them, but even though our defense has been mostly solid we still concede that one bad goal that ends up hurting our performance. Sometimes we end up losing or drawing the game because of it. The more goals that we can score and the more clean sheets we can get then we will obtain more consistency in winning matches.
I know that we can’t win the league and we may not reach the top four this season. But I believe that the Europa league is our best chance of getting silverware this season. Talent wise and in terms of quality I believe that we have what it takes to win the Europa league competition again. When Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw and the rest of players returns from injury hopefully our form will improve.
Ole would have a stronger squad and more options to choose from. Paul Pogba when he returns needs to show his world class talent on a consistent basis if our midfield and the team are to thrive and become successful.
