Manchester United moved on to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup today with a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Marcus Rashford scored twice to oust the Londoners out of the competition.
Marcus Rashford was the star of this contest and he scored from the penalty spot in the 25th minute after Daniel James was fouled in the box by Marcus Alonso. United showed good passing and movement on and off the ball, while the hosts didn’t play so well in the first-half.
However in the second-half, Chelsea showed more desire and attacking intent. They grew in confidence and Michy Batshuayi equalized for the Blues just after the hour mark when he ran with the ball from midfield took a cracking low shot from 20 yards out.
But Manchester United retook the lead with a wonderful strike from Rashford that nestled into the top right-hand corner of the net from a free-kick. “It was a Cristiano-like goal,” said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the match. It was probably one of the best goals that I have seen Rashford score.
So United is in the quarter-finals where they will join Manchester City, Aston Villa, Leicester City, Everton, Liverpool, Colchester United and Oxford. The quarter-final draw will take place on Thursday.
