In the first-half, United started the game well as they passed the ball around confidently. But Norwich were the ones who got the first opportunity to score when Todd Cantwell’s drive went over the bar. Then seven minutes later United would have their first chance to open the scoring through Andreas Pereira, but his right-footed shot went wide of the post.
Then Rashford ran into the box after a fine pass from Anthony Martial who took a low shot, but keeper Tim Krul made a solid save. United had another chance to score after Rashford swung in an inviting cross for Martial in the six-yard box and he headed it towards goal, but keeper Tim Krul produced an amazing close range save.
However, United got the breakthrough in the 21st minute when the ball was crossed into the box and Scott McTominay slammed a right-footed shot into the bottom right-hand corner. It was a one time shot that was well taken by the young midfielder. United were dominating the possession from the start of the match and they pressed for a second goal.
Later on there was a penalty given to United when Ben Godfrey fouled Daniel James in the box. But Rashford’s penalty shot was poor and it was easily saved by the keeper. But later on United would get a second goal when James saw Rashford all alone and made a long-range pass to the England striker and he then coolly slotted the ball past Krul in goal. Pereira would have another chance to add to the lead, but placed his shot wide.
However there was more drama when Todd Cantwell committed a handball in the penalty box. After VAR reviewed the decision it confirmed that it was a penalty. This time it was Martial that stepped up to take it, but it was a poorly taken spot-kick and the keeper dived low to his left and saved the shot comfortably. United blew their chance to take a 3-0 lead into half-time, but instead had to settle for a 2-0 scoreline at the break instead.
In the second-half, Norwich came out with a renewed purpose, and almost got a goal back when Max Aarons ran down the right-flank and put in a low cross into the box that Teemu Pukki blasted over at the near post. Martial would have another chance to make amends for his earlier penalty miss when James floated in a fine cross into the box for him. However the Frenchman had to stretch to take his shot and the keeper saved it.
It was end to end stuff from both teams. Each team look dangerous whenever they attacked or counter-attacked. The Red Devils would get a third goal when a nice one-two between Rashford and Martial in the box produced a beautiful chip by Martial over the keeper. This was a wonderful display by United, and it was a welcome sight to see after all the disappointing results this season.
Mason Greenwood came on for Anthony Martial in the 75th minute and Jesse Lingard replaced Daniel James in the 80th minute. United were well and truly in control and Lingard ran at Norwich’s defence and took a cracking drive from outside the box, but it sailed over the bar. Then Scott McTominay was dispossessed of the ball by Onel Hernandez and ran past two United players and placed a low drive beyond De Gea in goal to make it 3-1. In injury time Hernandez went on another driving run into the box but his shot went just narrowly wide.
Krul was called into action while dealing with an injury, and got down low to save a hard shot by Greenwood. Then a while after that the referee blew the the final whistle.
