Manchester United won 1-0 at Partizan Belgrade in their Europa League group L encounter on Thursday thanks to Anthony Martial’s penalty in the 43rd minute.
Manchester United had another lackluster performance, but they got their a first away win since their victory at PSG in March. United had the first two chances of the game when left-back Brandon Williams’s header went just wide at the far post. Then Jesse Lingard rattled the post after Juan Mata’s free-kick.
Umar Sadiq shook the post after a powerful drive from 25 yards and Takuma Asano’s shot just went wide as the homeside grew in confidence. Then the turning point of match came a couple of minutes before half-time Williams raced into the box and was fouled by Nemanja Miletic. Anthony Martial then easily scored his spot-kick as Partizan keeper Vladimir Stojkovic went the the wrong way. United went into the break with a priceless 1-0 lead.
In the second-half, Partizan returned with a strong desire to get back on level terms. Bebras Natcho’s effort went inches wide from a free-kick, and Seydouba Soumah went on a solo run down the middle and forced Sergio Romero to produce a fine save. United at this point were under pressure from the homeside, as they poured men forward in search of a tying goal.
Partizan threw everything they could at United late in the match as the fans grew more vocal by the minute. Romero produced an excellent save after a close-range effort by Asano’s close range header. In the 86th minute, Natcho shot slightly over the bar, as the crowds collective voices reached a crescendo.
United were forced to hold on as they fought valiantly to defend their slim advantage, and the referee blew the final whistle to the delight of United’s 2,000 traveling fans.
