Man Utd should have won against Liverpool

Manchester United played well in the first-half and contained Liverpool. We used the high pressing tactic against the visitors and we controlled the match in the first period. We created more chances then they did and we had the 1-0 lead at half-time. But in the second-half United started to drop deeper and deeper into our penalty box and that invited Liverpool on to us.

They placed more pressure on us as the game progressed. Andreas Pereira who played in the middle of midfield was energetic and won loose balls and ran at the opposition’s defence in the first period, and was suddenly switched to the right wing. What happened was he became ineffective and it was easy for Jurgen Klopp’s men to contain him. I am not sure what Ole said to his players at half-time, but all I know is that we played differently in the second-half.

If we played the second-half the same way how we played in the first-half, I believe we would have won this game. As the old saying goes “If its not broken don’t fix it.” Solskjaer’s tactics were clearly working in the first period and the men from Merseyside couldn’t counter act our system and we blew it in the second-half when Adam Lallana scored from close range after a cross from Andy Robertson.

One of the things about this game is that we just couldn’t get that second goal to kill Liverpool off. The goal that they scored against us was a poor one to concede because it came down to a lack of concentration. But if we had scored a second goal we would have won this match. Even though our defence is solid in nearly every game. The only game where we have scored more than a goal in a game is against Chelsea all the way back to the first game of the season.

All the other matches we got 1-1 draws or we lost or won or lost by one goal. The only match that we lost by more than one goal was West Ham. We lost away to them 2-0. So if we can get a second or third goal we would win more matches. This is why we need top class strikers so we won’t have this scoring problem. Because usually in most matches we would create enough chances to win the match, even though some of them aren’t clear cut chances. Top strikers like Mario Mandzukic and Moussa Dembele would have put those chances away.

Now that we are getting back many of our players through injury that should help us to win more games. Martial, Wan-Bissaka, and Jones is back and Paul Pogba should be back soon as well as Diogo Dalot. With Martial back Ole can play him and Rashford upfront now, because Rashford was our only recognized senior striker. Luke Shaw likes to come forward from the left-back position and he puts in dangerous crosses and likes to cut inside and take shots at goal. He adds to our attacking impetus that hopefully should help us score more goals. I hope that Jesse Lingard returns from injury soon also.
