Match Report: United 1 Rochdale 1 (United win 5-3 on penalties)

Manchester United averted a possible embarrassment against League one side Rochdale to qualify for the 4th round of the Carabao Cup. After the match ended 1-1 in regulation time Manchester United needed to win the game 5-3 on penalties.

Mason Greenwood scored for United again in regulation time after his first senior goal against Astana in the Europa League game. But the hero of the match was Sergio Romero when he saved the second penalty against Jimmy Keohane that sealed the game for United. Juan Mata, Fred, Andreas Pereira, Daniel James, and Mason Greenwood all scored their penalties. Daniel James banged in the winning goal.

Rochdale had the first attack of the night when Fred was dispossessed by Oliver Rathbone, and Callum Camps saw his moment to open the scoring but it was quickly snuffed out by a last ditch tackle by Axel Tuanzebe. Paul Pogba had the first chance when he took a long distance shot over the bar. Then after that both Fred and Pereira had attempts blocked and Pereira had a shot saved by by keeper Robert Sanchez.

Marcus Rojo also had a stooping header saved from 8 yards and he headed another effort wide from a corner. United’s best chance fell to Pogba when he ran into the penalty area and got on the end of Greenwood’s cross in the six-yard box, but the Frenchman header over the bar completely unmarked. One of the Rochdale players made an error that allowed Greenwood to sprint towards goal, but he failed to beat the keeper in a one-on-one opportunity.

Then Jesse Lingard in the 43rd minute missed with a glancing header as the ball landed on the top of the net. Rojo had an effort that just went wide of the goal. Nineteen-year-old Brandon Williams made his first senior appearance by coming on for Phil Jones at half-time. Former United youngster Rathbone exchanged a pass with Camps and Rathbone’s shot was cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Then Greenwood hit a left-footed drive just past the post. Lingard and Greenwood both went close with their chances also.

In the 68th minute, Greenwood was able to get the goal that he so craved when he received a pass from Lingard and then he smashed a low shot past the keeper to break the deadlock. But later on in the 76th minute it was Matheson who cracked a half-volley into the roof of the net after a cross by Ex-Red Matheson. It was 1-1 now and United tried to get a winner but it never came and so the match went to penalties. Everything culminated with Daniel James getting the winner from the penalty spot, with the Reds winning 5-3 on penalties in the end.
