Manchester United won their opening game of the Europa League campaign with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford courtesy of a goal by Mason Greenwood. His goal came in 73′ minute of the match. It was his first senior goal for the club.
United had dominated possession throughout the match. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer started a youthful squad with Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and Axel Tuanzebe all in the starting line-up.
The Red Devils attacked the visitors from the opening whistle and were the most likely to score when Fred smashed his shot against the crossbar. Then Marcus Rashford had his shot saved by goalie Nenad Eric at close range within the first 10 minutes of the match.
Rashford would have another fine effort saved by the keeper later on in the half. United despite their dominance in the game had to settle for a 0-0 score line as both teams went to their dressing rooms at half-time.
The second period began just like the first, as the home side created more chances but failed to capitalize on them. Frustratingly, as the game progressed it was still scoreless as United continued to press for the first goal. Boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer then brought on Juan Mata for Gomes and Jesse Lingard for Chong.
Then United got the breakthrough that they so desperately wanted. Mason Greenwood the 17-year-old striker popped up with a wonderful individual goal from close range. It was a fine finish and with that goal Greenwood became the youngest ever player to score in European competition for Manchester United.
Just past the 80 minute mark Diogo Dalot shot over the bar from close range, after he latched on to the rebound from a drive by Lingard that bounced off the post from 20 yards out. Our next match is an away game to AZ Alkmaar on October 3.
