In the Premier league match between Southampton and United, the Red Devils started off well, but the Saints used the high pressing tactic against us. Within the first four minutes of the game Scott McTominay’s shot flew over the bar following a pass from Juan Mata. Soufiane Boufal could have opened the scoring for the home side, but just missed the goal with low drive. Andreas Pereira also had a chance to score, but his effort was saved by goalie Angus Gunn.
Then in the 10th minute, Daniel James ran into the penalty box and cut in from the left and scored a beautiful goal that nestled into the top right corner of the net. United enjoyed most of the possession. Then Pierre-Emile Højbjerg blasted his effort high and wide.
James was hunting for a second goal, but Gunn was equal to saving his shot. Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Danny Ings for the Saints all had shots that went wide of the goal. The pace of the game went at fast clip and both teams were competitive.
Southampton was growing in confidence whenever they mounted attacks on United’s goal. But United came right back at them and we kept organized and compact at the back. For the last several minutes before the end of the first-half the match became more of an open affair.
In the second-half, Rashford had a shot saved by goalie Gunn in the few opening minutes of the half. But Southampton were having the majority the possession and were pushing their fullbacks further forward. They applied more pressure on visitors. That pressure paid off when Danny Ing’s header was punched away by David De Gea and the ball came out to Kevin Danso, who then crossed the ball into the box for Jannik Vestergaard to head home.
With both sides now on level terms, the home side continued to keep the pressure on United. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s right-footed shot from outside the box just missed the target. Nemanja Matic, Daniel James, and Marcus Rashford all had chances that were saved or just missed the target. Rashford also had a shot saved at the near post. Jesse Lingard came on for Andreas Pereira and Nemanja Matic replaced Juan Mata eight minutes after the hour.
In the 73 minute Kevin Danso fouled McTominay and received a red card and was sent off. Southampton were now down to 10 men. After that Jesse Lingard had a couple of efforts that went wide of the post. In the 82 minute, Mason Greenwood came on for Scott McTominay. United were in the ascendency and were applying the pressure on Southampton, but the homeside stayed organized and defended well.
We just couldn’t find a way to break them down and in the end United had to settle for a draw. Nothing went well for Rashford today, but Daniel James was our standout performer in this match. The youngster now has three goals in four games.
