Manchester United’s display against Wolves changed the recent trend where we lost two games in a row last term. Although we could have won through Paul Pogba’s penalty that was saved by Wolves keeper Rui Patricio. I loved the fact that we scored first in the game. In the two games that we played last season from what I could remember is that Wolves scored first, and they ended up winning both matches. That helped to set a positive tone for us and usually whenever a team scores first they many times or most times win the game.
United didn’t wilt under the pressure when the men in yellow black got the equaliser. We kept our composure and continued to keep the ball as much as possible. Overall during the whole match we had 65% of the possession, and in the first-half we had 70% possession of the ball.
For us to go to another team’s home ground and get so much possession considering that we lost there twice last season is an achievement in itself. Everyone played well and showed good consistency throughout the match. This is something that we weren’t able to do last season. If we can continue playing at a high level then we’ll challenge for more than one title this season.
Special mentions must be given regarding the performances of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire in particular. They were spot on again with their defending. Their positioning and calmness at the back was reassuring to the rest of the back line. They both did a fine job of keeping the opposition at bay as much as possible. They usually make the right decisions in matches and they showed their class during the match.
Congrats to Anthony Martial for getting his 50th goal for United. I hope that he’ll get a century of goals and many more. I think that center-forward role suits him just fine. He seems to be comfortable in that position. Usually in the past he would play on the left wing. Marcus Rashford is a natural center-forward and can definitely play in that position. But as the season advances it will be interesting to see if Martial will continue to play upfront or Rashford ends up switching roles with him.
I believe this season we will continue to see a team that will play with lots of pace on the counter-attack and have our wingers and wing-backs play an increasingly important role in the success of the team. Daniel James also did a fine job in the Wolves game and I am so excited to see him and the rest of the team mature more as the season goes along.
