What I loved about the Manchester United v Chelsea game

Manchester United’s 4-0 drubbing of Chelsea was a great way for United to start the season off. There were a few things that I loved from United in the game.

Firstly, I love the way how quickly United launched their counter-attacks. Whether it was Pogba, McTominay, Lingard or Rashford when they got the ball they broke swiftly and they were very fluid on the counter-attack. The counter-attacking style is what United is the best at right now. We have the players and the right system to do it, and we have young quick players to exploit the opposition’s weaknesses.

Secondly, we now have a strong solid back four of Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka that we can depend on. We haven’t had a reliable back four in a long while. There were always inconsistencies with our left-backs, right-backs and our centre-backs in the past. Many times in games they weren’t usually on the same page when they defended together. A group of certain defenders were either out of position, won’t aggressive in closing down players on a regular basis, or defensively we didn’t always look compact and organized.

Thirdly, I loved the fact that Rashford, Lingard, and Martial went back at times to help the midfielders and defenders defend the goal. Then you would see those three players sprint forward to start a counter-attack whenever they received the ball. Getting virtually all the players defending as a unit I think will help us to certainly keep more clean sheets this season.

Lastly, I love that we won the ball back quickly whenever we lost it. Then when we had the ball we placed pressure on Chelsea and we kept it well for most of the game. Manchester City and Liverpool do very well at winning the ball back and applying pressure high up the pitch. Which is also what United did in this game. The Red Devils also attacked in numbers which was lacking last season.

Players were making runs quickly forward to support the few others who were higher up the pitch. All of these good habits or practices are the attributes that we need in order to be successful this season. Once we can especially stay healthy and we play like how we performed against Chelsea or better, then the sky’s the limit for this team. Let’s go United!!
