Manchester United were the big winners against a Chelsea side that were poor defensively with Frank Lampard’s first match in charge.

A double by Marcus Rashford (18′ pen. 67′), one of them from the penalty spot, one from Anthony Martial (65′) and Daniel James (81′) completed the scoring rout. Chelsea threatened early in the game with Tammy Abraham almost put the visiting side ahead with a rasping drive from a loose ball that crashed against the right post.

Pedro then shot over the bar a few moments later. Martial had an opportunity to put United in front when a poor pass by Kurt Zouma presented the striker the chance to score, but his effort was a tame one. Chelsea were in the ascendency and had another scoring opportunity when Cesar Azpilicueta put in an excellent cross and a powerful shot by Mason Mount that forced Dea Gea into a fine save.

Referee Anthony Taylor called a penalty against Kurt Zouma who fouled Rashford in the box. Rashford justly slammed home the ball past goalie Kepa. The Red Devils began to grow in confidence. Aaron Wan-Bissaka made two clearances as the Blues continued their attack on United’s goal. Ross Barkley placed his shot just wide and also shot straight at De Gea who made a comfortable save. Emerson also shook the crossbar after Victor Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka missed a pass from Jorginho.

Chelsea resumed the second-half with the same enthusiasm as they started the first. Pedro’s shot deflected off Luke Shaw for a corner. From the resulting corner Emerson cracked another shot, and it was parried away by De Gea. Christian Pulisic was then introduced by Lampard to add a pair of fresh legs to the game. Then after that it was United that would put the match beyond the reach of Chelsea with two goals inside two minutes. Maguire began a counter-attack, and Jesse Lingard chased the ball and whipped in a superb cross that allowed Martial to side foot the ball past the keeper.

Then Paul Pogba produced a wonderful pass to release Rashford, who got United’s third in a one-on-one situation. Zouma then headed the ball over the bar. Daniel James had only been on the field for 8 minutes when he latched on to a pass from Martial. James took a shot and it deflected in and off Emerson for a fourth goal.

Both Mount and Ederson took shots to get on the score sheet, but they couldn’t breach United’s defence. The Red Devils were able to end the game with a clean sheet and a big win.
