Manchester United has joined the race to sign Lille winger Nicolas Pepe, that according to ESPN. The 24-year-old winger is valued by French club Lille at £70m. He can also play as a forward. The Ivory Coast international is also being pursued by Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool, PSG, and Bayern.
Pepe has scored 35 league goals in 74 appearances since joining Lille 2017. He has also played for the Ivory Coast senior national team where he has 15 appearances and 4 goals.
Manchester United certainly needs a new striker, but in order to buy Pepe United would need to sell Romelu Lukaku first in order to raise the funds to obtain him. The Ivorian has good pace and exhibits excellent skills and technique. Pepe likes to cut inside, likes to play short pases, he loves to dribble, is good at playing long balls and through balls. He is 6′ feet or taller.
If we can offload Lukaku it would be great for United because we wouldn’t have to deal with his inconsistent performances and his disinterested attitude that he exhibits during games is unacceptable. Lukaku doesn’t always make diagonal or even simple straight runs into the box as he should. He doesn’t use his size and strength to win balls in the air against his markers. The Belgian at times has gone 8 straight games without scoring a goal for United. Which is poor for a striker of his caliber.
Pepe I believe would be a breath of fresh air for United because he has different qualities or attributes compared to the big Belgian. He has a different skill set that all United fans would appreciate. If we do sign him I believe that he would be a significant asset to us.
