Manchester United has finally got their man. The Guardian reports that the Old Trafford club has agreed to a £45m fee for Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace. The 21-year-old right-back is an excellent signing for the club. The deal has add-ons that will increase the price to £50m.
I am happy that we have our second signing of the summer transfer window. With Daniel James being our first signing, United certainly set the right tone in acquiring young quality players with great potential. According to many sources, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still searching for a striker, midfielder and a centre-back. Harry Maguire is still on our radar as a player we could hopefully sign.
But what I am equally interested in is to see who are the players Manchester United will be able to sell. We already know that Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera’s contract will expire at the end of the season. Matteo Darmian is supposed to be sold soon. Juventus according to reports are interested in signing him. But nothing has come to fruition as yet. Romelu Lukaku will hopefully be sold soon. Inter Milan is interested in the Belgian striker.
But, Inter hasn’t met the £75m or £80m asking price that Manchester United wants. Goalie Lee Grant is another player that should be sold too. The 36-year-old stopper came to United last year from Stoke City. As of right now we have David De Gea, Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira. We don’t need four goalkeepers. Usually for many clubs three is enough for their senior squads.
Firstly, even though he is a good asset for us as far as experience wise goes, he is last in the pecking order at United. He only made one appearance last season. De Gea is number one then Romero, Pereira and then Lee Grant. Secondly, Grant is 36, and he’ll be 39 in three years. When you consider that the Premier League is the best league in the world, he wouldn’t be able to maintain that high level of play when you get to a certain age.
Lee Grant should be sold or released to a club that wants him, and where he can play on a regular basis instead of him warming the bench and being inactive. Ashley Young, Marcus Rojo and Nemanja Matic should be sold too. Ashley Young as a full-back has had performances that were unacceptable last season. He’s 33, and it could be that his career is on the wane. The same goes for defender Marcos Rojo who’s career has been marred by injuries and inconsistent performances.
Many of his appearances hasn’t added any value to the team. He needs to be with another team that has lower expectations than Manchester United. But Ole wants him to stay and he says that he has a future at the club. Nemanja Matic I believe should be another one that should leave.
His lack of closing down opposing players, along with not tracking and tackling players showed how inept he was in the last campaign. Matic was non-existent in many games and he doesn’t have the urgency and desire to help the team win games.
Let’s hope that the three other players that will be signed would be automatic starters for the whole season and won’t be placed on the bench by Solskjaer. I hope that Solskjaer gives Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe a lot of playing time next term. They are ready to step up to the senior level and they can offer much more than some of the defenders that we presently have on the roster.
