According to The Metro, Tottenham’s Eric Dier is on the shortlist to replace Nemanja Matic. As part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team overhaul he is looking to sign a holding midfielder this summer. Eric Dier seems to be one of the candidates of holding midfielders to be an alternative to Nemanja Matic who has had a disappointing season. His form has dropped substantially for the last two seasons.
Matic’s lack of mobility and urgency has become a problem for the team. I think that Eric Dier would be a fine replacement for the Serbian, but I would like to see the other alternatives. United needs a holding midfielder that can not only keep possession of the ball, but someone who can distribute the ball well with a good variation of passing. If he has some creativity that would be a plus.
Winning balls in midfield, tackling and closing people down are all critical attributes that he should have. Matic hasn’t performed any one of these duties and doesn’t show any kind of purpose, passion or drive in his game. Eric Dier has been a consistent performer for Spurs and the English national team for the most part.
I believe that Matic should be sold once United can do so. We should get younger quality alternatives in all positions that will not only make our squad more energetic, but also competitive against teams in the Premier League and in Europe. I am excited to see who we can get as a replacement for Serbian midfielder.
