Match Report: Everton 4 Manchester United 0

In the early stages of the game Everton looked confident passing the ball around. Then in the 11th minute Richarlison had two successive shots at the near post. One was saved by David De Gea, and the other one just went wide of the post after a cross by Idrissa Gueye into the six yard box from a corner.

United fell behind in the 13th minute when Richarlison scored with an over-head kick in the box. The goal was assisted by Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Everton were becoming more dangerous whenever they had the ball. Some minutes later Marcus Rashford’s right-footed shot went over the bar on an assist by Paul Pogba.

United would concede again not long after that. Two minutes before the half-an-hour mark it was Gylfi Sigurdsson who unleashed a powerful right-footed shot outside the box to double Everton’s lead. Nemanja Matic was the culprit when he allowed Sigurdsson the time and the space to take the shot. United lacked any real intensity or urgency in their game. We were lackadaisical in our play and we paid for it. It was half-time and it seemed that there was no way back for us in the match.

In the second-half, Everton continued their enthusiastic play. United were marginally better than the first-half. Things got from bad to worse when Lucas Digne scored a long-distance goal outside the box after De Gea had punched the ball out after a cross into the box. It was 3-0 now and the Red Devils couldn’t get themselves back into the game, because we kept giving the ball away. Theo Walcott who came on as a substitute scored the 4th goal through a counter-attack. He received a through ball and Walcott raced down the left side and he calmly slotted the ball past De Gea.

Anthony Martial missed United’s best chance of the game when he ran into the box and cut inside, but completely missed the left-side of the goal. That summed up the poor performance of our team today. Nemanja Matic also had a shot that went wide. Rashford was replaced by Andreas Pereira 13 minutes from time.

United didn’t get their first effort on target not until Martial took a shot that caused Jordan Pickford to make a save. It was the 86th minute, and the game ended with Everton dominating till the end. Ole has a lot of work to do in the summer along with Ed Woodward.

What did you think of today’s performance?
