This Champions league game will be one that all Manchester United fans would love to forget. Messi and company tore through our defense consistently at the Camp Nou today. Lionel Messi scored twice and a thumping goal by Philippe Coutinho capped off a stellar night for the Catalans. The Spanish side won 4-0 on aggregate, and boy did their dominance show.
United actually started well with Marcus Rashford clipping the bar with a toe-poked effort before the 1st minute of the match. Paul Pogba had played the striker into space with a fine pass. Referee Felix Brych had awarded a penalty in the 11th minute against Fred for a foul on Ivan Rakitic, but the decision was reversed after a review from the video assistant referee. Five minutes later, Ashley Young gave the ball away and Messi ran towards goal and Fred allowed the Barca man too much space and he curled a low shot past David De Gea near the box.
Then 4 minutes later it was Messi again on the scoresheet. Fred was guilty of giving the ball away and the Argentine capitalized with a weak shot that squirmed under De Gea’s body and into the net. Messi then tried a quick shot that went over the bar a few minutes later. Rakitic also had a header that was saved by De Gea. Luis Suarez could have scored after Rakitic picked him out with a cross across the box, but the Uruguayan shot straight into De Gea’s face instead.
Barcelona wasn’t done and Philippe Coutinho added a cracking shot that gave no chance to De Gea in goal after a great assist by Jordi Alba. Not long after Messi almost had a hatrick with an improvised bicycle kick that sailed wide of the right post. Jesse Lingard also fired a shot over the bar later in the game. Marc-Andre Ter Stegen made a wonderful save from substitute Alexis Sanchez late in the game. There was to be no comeback this time as United were beaten convincingly.
