United 0 Barcelona 1: Luke Shaw own goal separates the sides

Barcelona won 1-0 against Manchester United at Old Trafford in their Champions League quarterfinal, and they now take a slender lead to the Camp Nou. Luke Shaw deflected a Luis Suarez header into his own net. Manchester United didn’t give a performance that would inspire their fans that they can mount a comeback at the Camp Nou. It was quite an easy win for Barcelona with the Spanish team having 67% of the possession and United only having 33%. We had 10 shots with none on target and Barcelona having 6 shots with 3 on target.

The visitors were able to break the deadlock when Sergio Busquets passed the ball to Messi in the box, and then he turned and crossed it into Luis Suarez who’s header deflected off Shaw’s shoulder and into the goal. The 12th minute goal gave the Catalans more confidence to just keep the ball and pass it around. David De Gea came up with a brilliant save with his feet from a low Philippe Coutinho drive in the 36th minute.

United later on had an appeal for a penalty after Scott McTominay went down in the box under a Gerard Pique challenge. Then Diogo Dalot had the best chance of the night when Marcus Rashford floated in a cross, but Dalot headed the ball wide from close range.

In the second half, the Red Devils placed plenty of pressure on the visiting side, but they weren’t able to create any clear cut chances. Luis Suarez could have scored, but he fired his shot into the side netting after a good through ball by Nelson Semedo. De Gea also did a great job of saving a shot from Jordi Alba with his legs. United kept pushing for the equalizer but it never came, and Barcelona left Old Trafford with a vital win.

We certainly will have to go to Barcelona and score first or else the tie will be over quickly for us. If we score first, then we will be even 1-1 on aggregate. United must give a much better performance than the one we had today in order to turn this tie around.

Were you satisfied with United’s performance? Do you believe that we can win in Barcelona?
